Situated in the Suomussalmi centre by main road 5, is the Jalonniemi House, where you can see an exhibition on pre-historical Suomussalmi and have a coffee- or dining break in café-deli Herkkusuu, shop in the handicraft shop Käsikkäin and in the factory outlet of the sweet factory Namelli Oy.

Suomussalmi's varied nature offers the traveller versatile ways of recreation. The Hossa camping area, the Martinselkonen preservation area and the Ylivuokki recreational area offer a nature lover a lot to do and experience.
Manmade hiking routes can be found all over the parish, and Hossa has excellent canoeing opportunities. During the winter there are mechanically tended ski tracks in the Haverinen Skiing Centre and Hossa. There are also ca. 350 km of tended motor sledge tracks in the municipality area. The Oilola handicraft sales exhibition is a well known shopping place by main road 5. You will find handmade items from over 200 Suomussalmi locals and pieces of art for reasonable prices. The history of Suomussalmi is long and eventful. One of Finland's oldest dwelling places, over 9500 years old, has been found in the area. Besides prehistory, Suomussalmi is known for the famous battles of Winter War in the village and the Raattee road.
