Suomussalmi's varied nature offers the traveller versatile ways of recreation. The Hossa camping area, the Martinselkonen preservation area and the Ylivuokki recreational area offer a nature lover a lot to do and experience.
Manmade hiking routes can be found all over the parish, and Hossa has excellent canoeing opportunities. During the winter there are mechanically tended ski tracks in the Haverinen Skiing Centre and Hossa. There are also ca. 350 km of tended motor sledge tracks in the municipality area. Kumlinge is a small but active municipality in the middle of an archipelago. The four main islands Kumlinge, Enklinge, Seglinge and Björkö have inhabitants throughout the year and each island has its own characteristics, the nature varies and the inhabitants give their villages their own peculiar characteristics. There are good accommodation possibilities, restaurants and several guest marinas in the municipality. Village shops, banks, a post office, a chemist etc. serve the visitors.
