Suomussalmi's varied nature offers the traveller versatile ways of recreation. The Hossa camping area, the Martinselkonen preservation area and the Ylivuokki recreational area offer a nature lover a lot to do and experience.
Manmade hiking routes can be found all over the parish, and Hossa has excellent canoeing opportunities. During the winter there are mechanically tended ski tracks in the Haverinen Skiing Centre and Hossa. There are also ca. 350 km of tended motor sledge tracks in the municipality area. This museum depicting the life and times of Baron Gustaf Mannerheim, Marshal of Finland (1867—1951), has been functioning since 1951 in the same villa in the Kaivopuisto district of Helsinki where he lived during the period 1924—51. With the exception of a few rooms that have been converted for exhibition purposes, his home has been preserved in its original state. Guided tours are available in seven languages, and the museum also possesses vast photographic archives.

SOILE YLI-MÄYRY of Finland, a painter for more than 25 years, makes her paintings by using a palette knife. She uses paint in three ways: a thin, even coat, thick lines and by scraping lines into the painted area, for a three-dimensional look. The main theme in Yli-Mäyry’s work is humanity and people’s alienation from nature in the urban world.
A café, built in an old stable, in the yard area. Open from July till August daily 12 pm-5 pm, Stable Café open when Taidehalli is open.
